Our Organic Flaxseed Meal has a mild, nutty flavor and contains a wealth of omega-3 fatty acids. We carefully cold mill our certified organic brown flax seeds to preserve the freshness and nutrition of the precious flax seed oil. Add flax seed meal to smoothies, cereals and baked goods for texture and nutrients.

Flax (linum usitatissimum) was cultivated in Babylon as early as 3000 BC. In the 8th century, King Charlemagne believed so strongly in the health benefits of flax seed that he passed laws requiring his subjects to consume it. Now, thirteen centuries later, some experts say we have preliminary research to back up what Charlemagne suspected.

Our milled flaxseed is freshly ground to preserve the natural flax oil (also known as linseed oil) and nutrients. Although flax meal contains all sorts of healthy components, it owes its primary healthy reputation to omega-3 essential fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, lignans and fiber. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are thought to reduce blood pressure, and just two tablespoons of our ground flax seed offer 2430 mg of omega-3s. Lignans have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities, and flax seed contains 75 to 80 times more lignans than other plant foods. Flax meal is also high in dietary fiber, containing both insoluble and soluble fiber. It's also a believed to be a powerful natural cholesterol controller.

Flax is a great addition to many baked goods. Add flax seed to bread, pancakes, muffins, bars, cookies and other recipes for extra nutrition and a nutty flavor—just reduce the flour in a recipe by up to 25% and replace it with ground flax. You can also replace oil or shortening in a recipe with flax (substitute ground flax at a 3:1 ratio for best results). Using ground flax as an egg replacer in recipes for muffins, cakes, cookies and pancakes is easy: mix 1 tablespoon of flax seed meal and 3 tablespoons of liquid to create a flax gel that can replace each egg called for in the recipe. You’ll find more recipes and tips for flax seed meal in our recipe collection.
